VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Bulldogs survive Bobcats behind Miguez’s 35 digs

ORANGEFIELD — It’s no secret Destyn Miguez takes pride in defense.
Turns out, Nederland counted on the senior’s 35 digs in coming back from a 2-1 match deficit to defeat Orangefield 3-2 in the volleyball season opener for both teams.
Orangefield, which dropped to Class 3A this season, won the first and third sets 25-23, but Nederland stayed alive with a more dominant second match, 25-13, and won 25-23 before ending the night with a 15-13 win.
Freshman Kamren Savarino made a big debut to the varsity scene with 19 assists for the 5A Bulldogs. Senior Meg Sheppard led the offense with 12 digs and kept the Bulldogs alive with 14 digs as well.
Junior Karley McGill had nine kills and three solo blocks.
The Bulldogs will compete in the Pearland tournament starting Thursday.

BRIDGE CITY — Port Neches-Groves made the second and third sets look much easier than the first in its volleyball season opener.
Elizabeth Bolyard totaled 10 kills and a block, and Kaitlyn Gil served 18 points in helping the Rock-A-Noos start the season 1-0 with a 25-19, 25-8, 25-11 win over Bridge City on Tuesday.
Gil, the District 22-5A MVP from last season, also had nine kills. Layla Stansbury served eight points, had two blocks and finished with four kills, while Kasidee Sartin totaled seven service points.
Gil was also active defensively with five digs, matching teammate Harley Barnwell’s total. Bayja Newby led with six.
Holly Jones finished with 15 assists and a block. Barnwell added eight assists.
PNG plays in the Huffman tournament starting Thursday.
MEMORIAL 3, HOUSTON CHAVEZ 0
In Port Arthur, the Titans started 1-0 knocking off the Lobos 25-20, 25-19, 25-19. No statistics were available.
Memorial will compete in the Huffman tournament starting Thursday.
