News wins twice for opinion writing

The Port Arthur News has won two citations for honors in the 2018 Texas Better Newspaper Contest.
The contest year included work for all of 2017.
The News won fourth place for column writing in Division 2 for its entry of two columns by publisher Rich Macke. Those columns were “Texas law no help for renters,” published Sept. 27, and “Transparency needed in local council,” published Dec. 10.
The News was also awarded a second-place citation for editorial writing, Division 2, for “For The News’ family: It’s good to be home,” published Dec. 20 and “On this Holy Night, a gift for Greater Port Arthur,” published Dec. 24.
The contest is presented by the Texas Press Association and the awards were announced at the June 23 TPA Leadership Retreat in Montgomery.
