FRISCO – Lamar junior Kelly Meeuwsen has been named 2018 Academic All-Southland Conference, league officials announced Wednesday afternoon. It marks the second consecutive season Meeuwsen has been named to the all-academic squad.
A second-team selection, Meeuwsen also landed a second-team nod on the league’s postseason all-conference team after a season where she hit .328 with eight home runs and 32 runs batted in. She also drew 19 walks and stole eight bases on the year.
A three-time All-Southland selection, Meeuwsen enters her final season as the one of the program’s most decorated players. A lifetime batting average well over .300, Meeuwsen enters her senior campaign with 13 career home runs, 104 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. She has also recorded 38 doubles and 10 triples during her three seasons in Beaumont.
It didn’t take long for fans to realize Meeuwsen had a special talent. Sister of former LU standout Stephanie Meeuwsen, Kelly set LU single-season records for RBIs (42) and doubles (22) during her rookie campaign. She also led the Southland in doubles that season, and had streaks of 24 and 20 games where she reached base safely.
For an athlete to be eligible for the Academic All-Southland team they must be at least a sophomore, have completed one full year at the nominating institution prior to nomination, maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or significant reserve and play in at least 50 percent of the team’s total competitions for the season.
