Becoming the 96th Cardinal to be drafted by a Major League Baseball (MLB) team, Lamar’s Tanner Driskill earned the opportunity to continue his baseball career Tuesday when the pitcher was taken in the ninth round by the Washington Nationals as the 281st pick.

“We couldn’t be happier for Tanner,” said head coach Will Davis. “He came to Lamar and put up two great seasons for us. We are excited to follow his journey to the big leagues!”

Driskill played two seasons for Lamar, earning 2017 Honorable Mention All-Conference veneration and 2018 pre-season First Team All-Conference honors from Perfect Game. He was also named to the 2018 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watchlist in the pre-season.

Driskill had a 3.45 career ERA with 114 strikeouts to 37 walks. He threw 159 1/3 innings in 44 appearances, including 14 starts, and had a 10-8 record with eight career saves.

The selection of Driskill marks the fifth Cardinal to be drafted in two seasons under Davis and the 26th Cardinal to be selected in the past 10 seasons.
