Michael Arnaud slid down the leaderboard on the back nine almost as fast as he climbed it on the front nine Friday and, at the end of the day, found himself tied for 22nd, six shots off the pace in the Rex Hospital Open.
Andrew Landry, meanwhile, rallied on the back nine to shoot 73 and make the cut on the number at even par 144 in Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Classic.
Arnaud, tied for ninth when the day began, soared to the top of the leaderboard with an outgoing 31 that saw him make three birdies and an eagle over the Wakefield Plantation Course in Raleigh, North Carolina. Four bogeys on the back nine, however, led to an incoming 39.
The second round 70 left the West Orange-Stark ex at 136. Leader Sebastian Munoz shot 66 Friday and stands at 130.
Landry, who shot 71 on Thursday, put himself in a hole early with a double bogey on the par 5, fifth hole. He quickly got one shot back with a birdie at the sixth but offset that with a bogey on the eighth to make the turn in 38.
He climbed back to the cut line with a birdie on the par 4, 14th, gave himself some insurance with another birdie on the par 5, 15th, then fell to even par for the tournament with a three-putt bogey on 17. An excellent chip enabled the PN-G to make par on 18 and stick around for the weekend.
