FRISCO — Senior Logan Powell and junior Sebastian Santibanez have been named to the 2018 Academic All-Southland Conference team announced league officials Tuesday afternoon. Both players garnered first-team recognition. It marked the second consecutive year that Santibanez has been named to the team, while Powell was an automatic selection.

Players had to maintain a 3.0 grade-point average, play in at least 50 percent of the team’s matches and be at least a sophomore and have completed a full year at the nominating institution for the all-academic team. Both Cardinals posted GPA’s higher than a 3.6, with Powell maintaining a perfect 4.0.

LU’s duo was key in the Cardinals run through the Southland Conference Championship tournament to make their third consecutive NCAA appearance. Big Red had to win on the final day of the regular seasons just lock up the final spot in the conference tournament. The Red and White then knocked off the top-two seeds in the conference championships to advance to the field of 64.

Powell played the Nos. 1-4 singles positions this past season, posting a 9-11 (.450) overall record, but was 9-3 (.750) at the No. 4 spot. The Amarillo native, posted an 8-8 (.500) record in doubles competition between the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. He finished the year with a 4-4 record on court 1, and a 3-1 (.750) mark on court 2 with partner Benny Schweizer.

Santibanez played the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions for the Cardinals in 2018 and ended the year with a 10-10 (.500) overall record. Santibanez found a home at the No. 2 singles position after posting a 7-3 (.700) record. He ended the year by winning seven of his final nine matches. He also posted a 4-9 doubles record between lines 1 and 2 doubles.
