BEAUMONT — Join Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum in celebrating National Get Outdoors Day — GO Day —from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 9.

June GO Day was developed to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun at sites across the nation. Participating partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities. Prime goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors.

On this day, the 3^rd annual Gladys City Games will be held at Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum. Gladys City Games features sports and games that were played at the turn of the 20^th century.

A new game this year will be hoop-and-stick races. This game has roots in Ancient Roman history but was enjoyed by boys and girls even on the oil fields at Spindletop and listed as one of the top games at the turn of the century.

Other games that will be played are stickball, marbles, horseshoes, stilts, checkers, potato sack races, 3-legged race, marbles, horseshoes, the “Game of Graces”, jump rope, jacks, hopscotch, and tin can telephone.

“Many people don’t realize that children were at Gladys City, too,” director Troy Gray said. “We want to play some of the same games these children played while also promoting healthy fun.”

The gusher will blow at noon. The entrance fee is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and $2 for children under 12.

Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown is a replica of the boomtown that grew up around the Spindletop oil fields in the early 1900s. Located on US 69 at Jimmy Simmons Boulevard in Beaumont, the museum is open from 10-5 Tuesday through Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
