Neither Chris Stroud nor Andrew Landry were able to take advantage of a TPC Sawgrass layout set up for low scores Saturday, meaning the Port Neches-Groves exes will start the final round of the Players Championship well back in the pack.
Stroud followed rounds of 70-70 with an even par 72. That left him with a 54-hole total of 212 and dropped him eight spots down the leaderboard into a tie for 42nd. His scorecard showed four birdies and four bogeys.
Three of Stroud’s birdies came consecutively on the ninth, 10th and 11th holes to get him to t2-under for the day. But he offset that with bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes.
Landry, who had been tied for seventh after an opening round 67, shot 71 on Saturday and is one stroke behind Stroud at 213. He had birdies at 2, 6 and 12 and bogeys on 5 and 7.
Landry is tied for 55th, exactly where he began Saturday’s round.
Webb Simpson, the runaway leader, added a 68 to earlier rounds of 66-63 and is at 197. Danny Lee, the closest challenger heading into the final 18 holes, is seven strokes back at 204.
Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, after making the cut on the number, tied for the low round of the day with 65s. They are at eight under 208 and will play together in a final round pairing likely to draw a massive gallery.
