NEDERLAND — Nederland police located a homicide victim while investigating a call about two suspicious men in Nederland on Wednesday.

A neighbor in the 8000 block of Beauxart Gardens Road called police after seeing the suspicious men who had activated a doorbell alarm equipped with a video camera, assistant police chief Gary Porter said.

Police then found the neighboring home with the front and back doors open and Legg deceased on the floor. There was no sign of forced entry and there was no visible sign of a gunshot wound or stabbing. Porter said the death appeared suspicious. Justice of the Peace Precinct 8 Tom Gillam III called for an autopsy. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office ID Unit and the Jefferson County Regional Crime Lab processed the scene.

No one else was at the home at the time of the incident and nothing appeared to be missing from the home.

Porter gave a description of the two men that were captured on the security camera saying that one was wearing a short rimmed crushable beach style hat, a flowered shirt and carrying a backpack and the other man was wearing a baseball cap with a bandana over his mouth. He asked for people in that area to check their security cameras for around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Leatriz Tubbs, who works at a nearby convenience store and also lives in the area, said the neighborhood used to be quiet.

“Most of the people who live here have been around here for a while,” Tubbs said, adding that the store, which is less than a block from the crime scene, is located just outside city limits. “We know people by name.”

Tubbs said has seen an uptick in crime since Tropical Storm Harvey displaced people. Neighbors watch out for each other, have an active Neighborhood Watch Facebook page and have opted to install security lighting and cameras.

The last homicide in the city of Nederland occurred May 19, 2013 with the death of Patricia Dale Hebert, 67, who was found with a laceration to the left side of her neck inside her home in the 1500 block of North 27th Street.

The case was never solved.
