BEAUMONT — Lamar women’s soccer coach Steve Holeman announced the addition of two more student-athletes for the 2018 season.
Goalkeeper Sandra Nygaard (Sola, Norway) and forward Michele Scholz (Hamburg, Germany) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend LU. They are both freshmen who have both have four years of eligibility.
Nygaard helped her team with the Norwegian under-16 national championship. She has played on several teams that have contended for national championships.
“Sandra has very high potential,” said assistant coach Nathan Stockie, who works with the LU goalkeepers. “At 6 feet tall, she will be one of the tallest goalkeepers in the Southland conference. She will immediately provide competition at the goalkeeping position. We look forward to a competitive, bright future for her at Lamar University.”
Scholz has played for several German clubs, the last four seasons for Bramfelder Sportverein in Hamburg, Germany.
“Michele is a quick, skillful, dynamic forward who knows how to score goals,” Holeman said. “She is a very intelligent player who is technically and tactically sophisticated. Michele has the ability to compete right away on our front line and make us better.”
The addition of Nygaard and Scholz brings the total signing class for the upcoming season to 10. LU added three junior-college transfers: Goalkeeper Jocelyn Hanrath (Salt Lake City, Utah), defender/midfielder Siobhan Longmore (Busselton, Australia) and forward Esther Okoronkwo (Richmond/Northeast Texas CC) along with five freshmen: Defender Anessa Byerman (League City/Clear Springs), midfielder Aleythia Gutierrez (Edinburg), midfielder Anna Loftus (Milton Keynes, England), midfielder Juana Plata (Aldine Davis) and defender Irena Saether (Kirkenes, Norway) in February.
The Cardinals posted their most successful season ever in 2017, winning the Southland conference regular-season and tournament titles. LU was 18-4-1 overall and 10-1-0 in Southland Conference play. The Cardinals advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in their 11-year history, losing a heart-breaking 1-0 decision to sixth-ranked Texas A&M.
