Published 11:33 pm Saturday, April 28, 2018

Incarnate Word went ahead in the sixth inning and added a run in the seventh to prevent Lamar from taking a Southland Conference softball series sweep.

Brett Coleman worked the final 4 2/3 innings of UIW’s 5-3 win over Lamar on Saturday in Beaumont, the first loss for Lamar interim coach Demi Laney since she took over for Holly Bruder, who was placed on paid administrative leave Friday.

Savana Guidry of Nederland went 2 for 3 in a leadoff role to lead Lamar (28-25, 11-13 Southland). Shelby Henderson (home run, two RBI), Shannon Klaus, Mackenzie Futrell and Shelby Hughston also had a hit for the host Cardinals.

Hope Sobolewski and Emily Castro each had two hits for UIW.

Incarnate Word (13-30, 6-18) led 2-1 after the first inning, but Lamar added a run each in the second and third innings.

Lamar remained in eighth place in the Southland with one series left in the regular season, a three-game set at Nicholls State starting Friday. The LU Cardinals are a game ahead of Sam Houston State.

The top eight teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the conference tournament.
