BEAUMONT – Lamar sophomores Elodie Chapelet and Eva Martinez were named the All-Southland Conference Women’s Golf Team, conference officials announced Thursday.

Chapelet (Souraide, France), the 2017 SLC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, was named to the first team, while Martinez (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) was named the 2018 Newcomer of the Year along with receiving second-team accolades. Their efforts helped the Cardinals win two team titles and post a fourth-place finish at the Southland Conference Championship.

Chapelet followed up her incredible freshman season with a strong sophomore year. In nine events, Chapelet posted eight top-10 finishes, including six top-five finishes and one win. Chapelet, who averaged 74.08 strokes per round over 26 rounds, finished her season by tying for fifth at the Southland Conference Championship.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have a player in Elodie who we can rely on day in and day out,” LU coach Jessica Steward said. “Even during tough tournaments, she never finished worse than 11th.  She led our team in every event but two this season. Elodie is inarguably one of the best players in the conference.”

Martinez, who transferred to LU after playing her freshman year at Armstrong State, averaged 76.08 strokes per round over 26 rounds. She had three top-10 finishes, including earning medalist honors at the USA Intercollegiate in her first event as a Cardinal.

“Eva had a great season with us. She was a consistent contributor and showed up big time for us during some tough events and in difficult conditions,” Steward said. “Eva is undeniably a tough competitor and is very deserving of this award.

“Eva also made a lot of progress personally off the course throughout the season. I’m looking forward to utilizing her as a leader, and I know she can make a positive impact on our program in the coming seasons.”
