TENNIS: Sabine Pass’ Mistry wins 2A Region III

Travis Mistry has punched Sabine Pass’ first-ever ticket to the state tennis tournament.

The freshman won his final match Thursday in the 2A Region III tournament in Corsicana, beating Tommy Nguyen of Woden 6-1, 6-0. The state tournament for all classes will be held at Texas A&M University, May 17-18.

The accomplishment has earned Mistry the Twitter hashtag of #MistryMakesHistory.

5A REGION III

In Willis, Jayci Wong finished third in the girls singles bracket of the 5A Region III tournament at Blythe Calfee Tennis Center and has qualified as an alternate for the 5A state tournament after making it as runner-up the past two seasons.

Wong ran into Alvin Shadow Creek freshman Juliana Sierra in the semifinals. Sierra edged Wong 7-6 in the first set after winning the tiebreaker 6-2 and then won the second set 6-1.

Wong came back to beat Kris Sherrill of Shadow Creek 6-4, 6-4 for third. Esther Lovato of Pflugerville Connally beat Sierra 6-2, 6-1 in the title match.

In boys singles, Alex Luketich of Nederland beat Adrian Muniz of Houston Austin in the first round but lost to eventual champion Ben Erdmann of Ennis in the quarterfinals, and Noah Moore of Port Neches-Groves lost to eventual runner-up Gerardo Palencia of Shadow Creek.

In girls doubles, Samantha Garza and Melanie Ramos of PNG beat Yuliana Bermudes and Lorena Salinas of Houston Milby before losing to eventual champs Rachel Strait and Jessica Strait of Georgetown. In boys doubles, both Jarrett Atterberry and Zach Buff of Nederland and Dalton Broussard and Jack Holtham of PNG bowed out in the first round. Nederland mixed doubles duos Heidi Hardy and Tereal Jimenez, and Tommy Hoang and Nhi Huynh, both lost in the first round.
