FOOTBALL: UIL to begin using instant replay in 2018 finals

Published 12:36 pm Thursday, April 19, 2018

Instant replay will be utilized in the University Interscholastic League state football championships beginning in December, Texas’ governing body for secondary-school activities announced Thursday.

Among the UIL’s exceptions to instant replay, no coaches’ challenges will be used, as replay officials will initiate all reviews. Targeting also will not be called as a result of a review, but only by officials on the field. A collegiate replay official will review plays in a replay booth.

Instant replay will not be permitted during regular-season or playoff games leading to the championships.

UIL director of athletics Susan Elza said the consensus among officials and coaches consulted about instant replay is that Texas high school football is ready for what she calls “a valuable addition.”

“With all UIL state championship football games at a single location, we have the technology and ability to utilize these powerful tools to make the state championships the best possible experience for coaches, players, officials and fans,” UIL Executive Director Charles Breithaupt said. “Instant replay will help ensure that the calls during the biggest games of the year are as correct as possible.”
