MEN’S BASKETBALL: Lamar lands JUCO standout Jeudy

Published 5:37 pm Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Lamar’s incoming class for the 2018-19 men’s basketball season grew by one Tuesday as Edwin Jeudy of Gillette (Wyoming) College signed with the Cardinals.

Lamar will have eight newcomers, four who have signed this school year and four more who sat out to satisfy NCAA transfer policy.

Jeudy is ranked 78th among junior college players by JUCORecruiting.com. He averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game as a sophomore and 11 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a freshman at Gillette, which won 59 games in the past two seasons.

“We were looking for someone who could play the stretch four,” Price said in a Lamar release. “[Assistant coach Brandon] Chappell identified Edwin, and when I saw him on film he really stood out. He is a very athletic guy who has the ability to guard multiple positions. He also has long arms, which helps make him a better rebounder.”

Jeudy is a native Haitian whose family moved to Montreal at age 6. He shot 31 percent from three-point range and better than 75 percent at the free-throw line both seasons.

“With Edwin having come through the junior college ranks, he is already battle-tested and he brings some experience with him,” Price said. “I felt it was crucial that we bring in a guy with some maturity — both on and off the court. Once we got to know him, we were not only impressed with him as a player but as a young man as well.”

Jeudy joins November signees Christian Barrett of Houston, Davion Buster of Austin and Grehlon Easter of Little Rock, Arkansas, in the signing class for next season. Barrett earned NJCAA All-American honors at Jacksonville College, and Buster and Easter are high school seniors.

V.J. Holmes, Jordan Hunter, Mike Kolawole and Laquarious Paige sat out this season as transfers.
