FRISCO – Lamar’s Amelie Vossgaetter is the Southland Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Lamar (4-13, 2-6 Southland) scored a crucial 6-1 win over Nicholls State (11-9, 2-7 SLC) on Sunday to keep its 2018 Southland Tournament hopes alive. The game was postponed due to weather.
This is the first weekly award of the season for Lamar.
Vossgaetter and teammate Jasmin Buchta clinched the doubles point for Lamar on Saturday with a 6-4 win over Nicholls’ Stephanie Barnett and Lingfeng Gu, playing at the top line. The freshman from Langenfield, Germany, then squeezed out a close back-and-forth match against the Colonels’ Mariia Kozachok on court three. Vossgaetter took the first set 7-6 (7-2) but dropped a tough second set 7-6 (7-5). She swung a 10-8 deciding set to take the match.
