BEAUMONT – November signee Christian Barrett has been named NJCAA Honorable Mention All-America, becoming the second LU signee in the past three years to receive the honor (Colton Weisbrod).

Barrett will transfer to LU from Jacksonville College where he spent the 2017-18 season.

The 6-6 forward played in 27 games this past season, earning 26 starts. He shot better than 51 percent from the field (88-of-172) and was an 81 percent free throw shooter. Barrett averaged nearly a double-double per game as a sophomore scoring 10.6 points and pulling down 9.1 rebounds per game.

Barrett came out of high school as a two-star prospect for Westbury Christian. Barrett led his prep squad to a 33-7 (.825) overall record and a perfect run through district play. Westbury wrapped up the season by bringing home the 2016 state championship behind Barrett’s 19 points and 11 rebounds per game.

The addition of Barrett comes at the right time for the Cardinals, who graduated leading scorer and rebounder – Weisbrod – following the 2017-18 campaign. For the previous two seasons, Weisbrod was a factor in the Southland ranked among the leaders in points and rebounds. He graduated by scoring 994 points and pulling down more than 500 rebounds during his two seasons.

“Christian gives us a grown man in the paint,” said LU head coach Tic Price following Barrett’s signing in November. “He is one of those guys who is going to battle. He takes pride doing the little things on the court. With us losing Colton, Christian is a guy that we see who can come in and play a very similar role.”

Barrett signed along with high school standouts Davion Buster (Austin) and Grehlon Easter (Little Rock, Arkansas) in November.
