GIRLS BASKETBALL: Titans’ Portalis hailed 22-5A top defender

Port Arthur Memorial senior Kerianna Portalis was honored as the District 22-5A defensive player of the year.

The district on Wednesday announced its superlative honors and released its all-district teams. Portalis was one of two Jefferson County players to win a superlative, as Ozen’s Ashley Kirven shared the most valuable player award with Lumberton’s Megan Wilkinson.

According to her MaxPreps file, Portalis averaged 2.6 steals per game, as the 5-foot-4 senior ran the point and also played the 2-guard position.

Hannah Hawkins of Livingston was named offensive player of the year, Kayden Morris of Lumberton was hailed newcomer of the year, and Tammy Walker-Brown of Ozen is the coach of the year.

Memorial’s Julia Sion and Port Neches-Groves’ Mollee Priddy made the All-District 22-5A first team, along with Central’s Cameron Dill and Tamya Renfro; Livingston’s Johnnyce Dirden; Lumberton’s Jolee Smith and Erin Talley; Ozen’s Bikiia Gipson and Maya Culpepper; and Vidor’s Aubry Downs and Chriseline Quirante.

Second-team members: Memorial’s Dakayla Miller and Jacqualine Gibbs; Nederland’s Cassidy Thomas; PNG’s Harlee Barnwell; Central’s Destiny McQuarters; Livingston’s A’Mya Handy; Ozen’s Megan Chambers, Briona Nash and Gayla Joseph; and Vidor’s Marissa Lejan.

Third-team members: Nederland’s Da’Reyale Jones; Memorial’s Daicha Kimble and Vern’Niqua Davis; and PNG’s Maylin Stampley.
