GROVES — Larry’s French Market has long been known for its tribute to the Cajun culture, from the food to the music and the dancing.

Now, for the second year, Larry’s will host Texas Folklife Big Squeeze Accordion Contest as well as discussion about keeping the Cajun music genre alive with up and coming generations.

Texas Folklife will be at Larry’s from to 2–4 p.m. Saturday. The Big Squeeze program supports up and coming Texas youth accordionists which recruits players in all genres of accordion-based music, including German, Czech and Polish polka, Creole, Cajun and zydeco, conjunto, norteno and Tejano, according to information from the organization.

But it’s the discussion of keeping the music alive that will take center stage.

“Texas Folklife is committed to community engagement and helping to encourage young local musicians to play traditional music, and carry on Cajun accordion and Cajun music culture,” according to the press release.

Some of the topics to be discussed include:

• What are the needs of the community in terms of youth traditional music participation?
• How can Texas Folklife encourage or facilitate those community needs?
• How can arts organizations, supporters, school music teachers, and others partner together to work on this initiative?

After the discussion and showcase, Jude Moreau, bandleader of the Bon Temps Playboys and Cajun Music Hall of Famer, and Donovan Bourque, Big Squeeze Cajun/Zydeco Champion for 2017, will perform.

The showcase and discussion are free and open to the public. Accordionists who wish to audition at this showcase can do so by contacting Texas Folklife.
