STATE SWIMMING: Thompson advances in 100 backstroke

Published 10:41 pm Friday, February 16, 2018

Karley Thompson of Nederland is still in the chase for a state swimming championship.

Thompson, swimming in Austin for the fourth straight year, is seeded fourth in the 100-yard backstroke after Friday’s preliminary heats at the UIL championships at the University of Texas’ Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. Thompson finished fifth in this event as a junior at state and was fourth in the 5A Region VI meet in Magnolia earlier this month, but has improved her placing in state each year.

Thompson will also swim in the consolation round of the 50-yard freestyle after seeding 13th. The highest she can place in that event is ninth.
