GULF SHORES, Alabama – Despite an inauspicious start to the first day of play at the Faulkner State Sun Chief Classic, Lamar State College Port Arthur clarified one point – the Seahawks can play ball.

After an early-morning 9-1 loss to Jones County (Florida) Community College, the Seahawks rebounded for back-to-back wins, taking a 13-3 decision over Central Alabama Community College and a 10-6 win over Southern Union (Alabama) CC on Friday.

The Hawks, now 3-3 for the season, continue their tournament run with games Saturday against Wallace State (Alabama) CC at 1:30 p.m. and Coastal Alabama College-South at 6 p.m.

Jones County CC 9, LSCPA 1

The Seahawks had a tough start to the day, giving up seven straight runs over the first three innings, most of those coming thanks to four fielding errors.

Starter Briana White allowed just one earned run over two innings of work, giving up three hits with one strikeout and three walks. LSCPA reliever Jessica Saenz allowed four hits for three earned runs, including a home run.

At the plate, the Hawks struggled to get things going, collecting just four hits with Regan Dowers, Ashley May and Saenz each going 1 for 2. Dowers hit was a double.

LSCPA 13, Central Alabama CC 3

As though a switch tripped between Game 1 and Game 2, the Seahawks collected 14 hits and committed no errors en route to their first win in the annual Alabama tournament.

Julie French led the offensive onslaught with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate, collecting two runs batted in with a double in the game. Taylor Frederick added a double and three RBI on a 2 for 4 showing at the plate for the Seahawks.

White, Kaitlyn Stebelton, Morgan Chavarria and Lilly Renteria each added two hits as the Seahawks scored seven in the second inning alone to run away with the win early. Stebelton, White and May each had a stolen base.

May went the distance on the mound, allowing just three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

LSCPA 10, Southern Union State CC 6

Sophomore pitcher May came back in the third game of the day to dominate early on the mound. But it was her work at the plate that made the biggest difference as the Cleveland native crushed a grand slam home run in what would make the final difference in the game.

With Maloy, White and French on board for May’s third-inning trip to the plate, the sophomore took a ball on the first pitch, then took the second offering over the left field wall for a 10-4 lead.

Southern Union State would make it interesting with two more runs in the sixth inning to close the gap to 10-6, but Kelsey Stewart would work the final four innings of the game to near perfection on the mound to earn the win. Stewart allowed no earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.

White’s hit in the game was a double. May and Stebelton each had two hits at the plate with Stebelton collecting three RBIs.
