Needing a win in the worst way, Lamar State College Port Arthur found the best way to beat Angelina College on Wednesday night.

The Seahawks followed a triple-double performance by Rodney Brown to an 83-77 win at the Carl Parker Center on Wednesday night, handing LSCPA a desperately-needed conference win.

Brown, a Beaumont sophomore, led the Seahawks with 19 points, adding 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots as LSCPA improved its conference record to 3-11 and overall tally to 10-15. This is just the sixth triple-double in LSCPA men’s basketball history.

“We had some big games out of some guys tonight and that made the difference,” LSCPA head coach Lance Madison said. “I was proud of our guys. They beat a good Angelina team.”

The Roadrunners, who fall to 13-12 overall and 5-9 in conference, played even with the Seahawks early in the first half, leading by as many as three on three difference occasions. But the Hawks battled behind Brown and Silsbee sophomore Tra Grubbs, taking a 15-14 lead at the 10:18 mark of the first half. The Roadrunners would never see an advantage on the scoreboard again.

The Hawks would head to the halftime break up by seven, 38-31, and the momentum kept rolling for the home team as LSCPA extended its lead to as many as 17 points with 10:50 left in the game.

Angelina was far from giving up, though, as they chipped away at the LSCPA lead to cut it to a single possession at 79-76 with 30 seconds left.

Angelina College’s Travis Henson led all scorers with 20 points and teammate Kevin Norman dropped in 17.

The Seahawks continue their three-game homestand with a homecoming game Saturday against Lee College.

That game tips off at 4 p.m. at the Carl Parker Center. LSCPA then plays Jacksonville College on Monday night at 7 at the Parker Center in a game rescheduled due to ice in January.
