After three straight losses, two by one point apiece, Lamar State College Port Arthur’s men’s basketball team needed a change in momentum. The Seahawks found it against Lone Star College-Tomball.

Freshman forward Devin Ellis led all scorers in pacing the Seahawks to a 90-69 non-conference win over Tomball, ending a win drought that dates back to Jan. 24 when they defeated conference foe Lee College. The Seahawks are now 9-14 overall for the season.

On Wednesday night, the Seahawks managed a first-half lead of 38-33 in spite of an early lack of defensive prowess on the court. Ellis had seven first-half points and three other Seahawks added six apiece to keep LSCPA ahead through the first 20 minutes. The Seahawks never trailed in the game, ahead by as many as nine points twice in the first half. Tomball was able to cut the Seahawks’ lead to one point early in the game and again with five minutes left until the break but the Timberwolves were never able to overcome the Hawks on the scoreboard.

The second half was nothing but the Seahawks as they extended their lead back out, finally eclipsing the Timberwolves by double-figures midway through the half. Thanks to a revived defense, one that worked the press well against the T-wolves, the Hawks were able to extend out to as many as 23 points late in the game.

Ellis added eight rebounds to his points total, while Rodney Brown finished with a double-double for the Seahawks with 13 points and 10 rebounds for LSCPA. Freshman guard Tevin Baker had 13 points with six assists, sophomore guard Tra Grubbs added 12  points with six rebounds and three steals, and sophomore forward Stefan Radosavljevic added 10 points with four rebounds and four assists for the Hawks.

LSCPA returns to conference play this Saturday with a road trip to Jacksonville College. That game tips off at 6 p.m. The Seahawks then return home for a triple-game set starting Wednesday, Feb. 14 against Angelina College at 7 p.m.Saturday, Feb. 17 against Lee College at 4 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 19, against Jacksonville College at 7 p.m. All games are played at the Carl Parker Center in Port Arthur.
