PREP ROUNDUP: Wesley’s 35 helps Titans go to 10-0 in district

LUMBERTON — Tuesday was a nice night to be Thailan Wesley.

Port Arthur Memorial’s leading scorer scored 35 points, and the Titans didn’t leave much to chance on the road with a 79-42 win over Lumberton.

Memorial (23-5, 10-0 in 22-5A) won its 15th straight game and holds a magic number of three in its pursuit of a second straight District 22-5A championship. Next for the Titans is a home game against Ozen on Friday.

Jyson Butler scored 18 points and Nate Clover had 12 for Memorial.

Lumberton dropped to 10-20 and 2-8.

 

Ozen 48, Nederland 39

BEAUMONT — Hayden Hefner scored almost two-thirds of Nederland’s points, but the Bulldogs (22-11, 5-5 in 22-5A) have fallen into a tie with Vidor for fourth place in district standings with four games to go.

Hefner had 23 points to lead Nederland, which will host Port Neches-Groves in a big Friday game.

Ozen improved to 15-10 and 8-2 with the victory.

 

Hull-Daisetta 81, Sabine Pass 69

DAISETTA — Daniel Sam had 31 points before fouling out in the third quarter, and Hull-Daisetta went on a 24-6 run in the fourth quarter to drop the Sharks (9-13, 1-4) further in district standings.

It wasn’t the first time the Bobcats turned things around. A 27-18 second period gave them a 43-42 halftime lead.

Sam, the leading scorer in Class 2A, left after making 12 of 19 from the floor and 5 of 8 free throws. Harold James added 20 points and Jeann Zuniga had seven for the Sharks.

Sabine Pass will host Evadale next Tuesday.

 

GIRLS HOOPS

PNG 45, Vidor 34

VIDOR — Maylin Stampley scored 15 points, distributed five assists and made three steals, her all-around game helping PNG (16-21, 3-9) pick up a district win on the road.

PNG is out of contention for the 5A playoffs, but its win severely damaged Vidor’s hopes.

Mollee Priddy totaled eight points, six assists, eight rebounds and three steals; Harlee Barnwell had seven points, 10 rebounds and two steals; and Holly Jones had six points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals for the Indians.

 

BOYS SOCCER

PNG 4, Vidor 1

VIDOR — Preston Riggs pulled off a hat trick for the second game in a row, and Port Neches-Groves (8-3-1, 2-0 in 22-5A) stayed busy on the offensive end in beating Vidor.

Sergio Aguilar scored the Indians’ other goal. Marlon Sandoval, Jason Lovejoy, Riggs and Aguilar each made an assist.

Riggs now has 22 goals on the season.

Next for PNG is a rivalry match at home against Nederland on Friday. The game is designated as PNG’s Teacher Appreciation Night.

 

Central 7, Nederland 4

NEDERLAND — A high-scoring affair would not go Nederland’s way, and now the Bulldogs (4-6-1, 0-2 in 22-5A) are still looking for their first district win going into Friday’s showdown at PNG.

Jadon Castille scored two goals, while Ethan Vincent and Aldo Ramirez each talled one for the Bulldogs. Payne Barrow made two assits.

Central led 4-3 at halftime.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

PNG 2, Vidor 1, OT

PORT NECHES — Kaylee Landry took a shot that sailed into the upper part of the net in the first part of overtime, and Port Neches-Groves held off Vidor at home.

PNG (10-1-3, 2-0) took a 1-0 lead 8 minutes in off a corner kick from Grace Reed. Izzy Volk tapped in a header from Breeana Riggs.

Vidor got on the board after rebounding a Libbie LeJeune save with 7 minutes before halftime.

PNG will visit Nederland in a rivalry match Friday.
