PA sees fourth murder in two days

Port Arthur has seen four murders in two days time – almost as many as the city saw in 2017 alone, with detectives working feverishly to solve the deaths.

The four deaths are not related and there seems to be no cause or reason for the violence that has occurred from Jan. 25 to Jan. 26.

Port Arthur Police Chief Patrick Melvin said police developed suspect information in the crimes and look at making additional arrests soon — so far two people have been arrested.

“Since all of the incidents are unrelated, the police department is dependent on the community to assist with any leads they may have,” Melvin said. “If you see something, say something.”

PAPD has developed many leads and encourages residents to let them know if they have additional information that may solve these crimes. Persons with information on the crimes can call 983-8600.

“The police department is working diligently and are on top of all the cases,” Port Arthur Mayor Derrick Freeman said. “We want the citizens to know the police force is out in full and are confident they will solve these cases.”

Freeman didn’t speculate on the why behind the sudden unrelated violent acts in the city and called it an anomaly.

Here’s a look at the four murders:

  • On Thursday, Jan. 25, police responded to a major collision with multiple vehicles involved at the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and 39th Street around 11:30 a.m. The driver who caused the collision had been involved in a prior incident somewhere between the 6900 block of Memorial Boulevard and the 39th Street intersection and had been shot.

The gunshot victim, identified as Jose Pompas Leal, 27, succumbed to his injuries and lost consciousness behind the wheel and continued into the intersection causing a “horrific” wreck, Melvin said during a press conference prior to the arrest of one of two suspects in the shooting.

James Joseph Levron, 25, was arrested Friday night. Bond is set at $500,000, according to jail personnel. Levron also has three motion to provoke probation charges as well for unrelated incidents.

  • That night around 6 p.m. two en were shot while on the porch of a home I the 1300 block of Trinity Avenue.

One of the men, Kevin Tran, 24, was fatally shot in the back of the head and in the chest. A second victim, Sheldon Polk, 24, was also shot in the chest and the head and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. He was last listed in critical condition.

A two-year-old child was in the home at the time of the shooting but was unharmed.

No arrests have been made in this case as of Saturday afternoon.

  • At 2:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, police responded to a home invasion in the 7500 block of South Fourth Avenue in Sabine Pass.

Jonah Rivera had confronted several; masked people who went to the home looking for someone and suffered injuries to his mouth and facial area. He was incoherent and unable to provide useful information, according to a press release from the PAPD.

He was sent to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment. Police later learned he died from his injuries and had been shot in the mouth.

Officers responding to the home saw a small passenger vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed leaving Sabine Pass. They pursued the vehicle into Port Arthur, and later found the vehicle abandoned in the 4500 block of 13th St. Officers had reason to believe this vehicle was involved in the incident that occurred in Sabine Pass.

No arrests have been made in this case as of Saturday afternoon.

  • Later that night at around 11:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 26, a disagreement escalated to a fight leaving one person dead with a stab wound to the chest in the 600 block of Sixth Street.

The victim, identified as Ervin Michael Jefferson, 37, of Port Arthur, had been stabbed in the chest with a long knife and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont where he died shortly after arrival, according to a press release from the PAPD.

A second man, the suspect, was at the scene when police arrived. He is identified as Shanga Hudson, 41, of Port Arthur and a resident of the home where the fight occurred.

Hudson was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Bond was not set as of Saturday afternoon.
