BEAUMONT — The number of public high schools went from three to two overnight.

The Beaumont Independent School District Board of Managers voted at their regular meeting on Thursday to merge Central High School with Ozen High School, creating a 6-A school. West Brook is the other 6-A public high school in Beaumont.

Central received heavy damage from Tropical Storm Harvey and was deemed beyond repair and too expensive to repair. The school will close and students will move to Ozen for the 2018-2019 school year.

Ninth-graders are currently housed in a separate building at Central that wasn’t damaged while students in grades 10-12 are housed at the former Austin Middle School this school year.
