Driver ID’d in fatal wreck in Orange

ORANGE — A Nederland man was killed early Wednesday when his westbound vehicle hit a guardrail on Interstate 10 and went airborne.

The Texas Department of a Public Safety said in a news release that Jeremy Michael Martinez, 37, was driving near exit 860 in Orange County around 5 a.m. when the one-vehicle wreck occurred.

Justice of the Peace Joy Simonton pronounced him dead at the scene.

A passenger, Carla Culver, 42, from Beaumont, was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries, the DPS reported. She remained hospitalized later Wednesday.

An investigation was launched at the scene. DPS said it was not known why the vehicle struck the initial guardrail; it later struck a second guardrail.

DPS said no other information was immediately available.
