Stroud leads again, then falls to eighth through three rounds

Four errant tee shots — two of them into hazards — and a putter that cooled considerably were more than Groves native Chris Stroud could overcome in the third round of the Tournament of Champions Saturday at the Planation Course in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii.
Despite making five birdies, and briefly being tied for the lead after his fifth hole of the day, Stroud had to settle for a one-under-par 72 and a 54-hole total of 210. He dropped four spots into eighth place, seven strokes behind leader Dustin Johnson who shot 66 for 203.
Brian Harman is second at 205, followed by Jon Rahm at 207, Rickie Fowler and Jason Dufner at 208 and Jhonatthan Vegas and Pat Perez at 209.
The back nine proved to be Stroud’s downfall for the second time, as he followed an outgoing 34 with a 38. He also shot 34-38 in Thursday’s opening round and made bogeys on the same two holes — the par 4 13th and the par 5 15th.
On 15, he pulled his drive left into a hazard, had to take a penalty stroke and missed a 14-footer to save par. His other tee ball into a hazard came on the par 3, eighth where gusting winds blew his iron shot into extremely tall weeds behind the green.
Instead of taking a penalty shot, Stroud gambled by hitting out of the hazard and nearly salvaged par. His putt from 11 feet veered right, however.
Stroud had gotten off to his usual strong start, with birdies from 3 feet on No. 2 and 3 feet on the par 5, fifth after hitting the green in two. At that point he was tied with Johnson for the lead at 10-under.
He closed out the front with birdies from 12 feet at 7 and 6 feet at 9. But they were wrapped around the bogey at 8. His final birdie of the day came on an 18-foot putt at the par 4, 16th. That got him back into a tie for sixth, but not making birdie at the easy par 5, 18th, led to dropping two more spots.
During the first two rounds, one of Stroud’s keys was saving par when his tee ball left him out of position. Making several clutch, par-saving putts resulted in just four bogeys over the first 36 holes. He made four more bogeys on Thursday while taking 30 putts.
While any chance of winning has almost certainly slipped away, a top-10 finish would be a big boost for Stroud in FedEx points and result in a hefty check. Winds are projected to gust up to 35 miles per hour Sunday, so there will be a chance to make a move.
