LUMBERTON — Nederland is one of the teams in District 22-5A boys basketball teams are gunning for, so Lumberton took its best shot.

But with three players in double figures, the Bulldogs had just enough to pick up their first district win of the season, 54-49, Tuesday night.

Cade Smith scored 12 points, Hayden Hefner netted 11 and Tanner Fulk totaled 10 for the Bulldogs (18-7, 1-1 in 22-5A). Gavin Whitmire scored 15 to lead Lumberton (0-2 in 22-5A0.

Nederland hosts 22-5A co-leader Ozen on Friday night.

 

Ozen 55, PNG 44

PORT NECHES — A 21-11 first quarter for the Panthers proved too much for the Indians (11-11, 1-1 in 22-5A) to overcome.

Jakia Oliver had 19 points and Justin Pleasant 12 to lead Ozen (6-7, 2-0), which led 32-17 at halftime. Trent Lee and Tracy Smith each scored 10 to pace PNG, which visits Vidor on Friday.

 

Kirbyville 77, Bob Hope 56

In Port Arthur, Chris May finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds and Jay Daigle connected for 20 points, but the Eagles didn’t get much else in a loss to the Wildcats.

 

GIRLS HOOPS

Central 42, Memorial 33

In Port Arthur, free-throw shooting came back to haunt the Titans (4-16, 2-2) in a district loss to the Jaguars.

Memorial made 5 of 16 at the line, compared to Central’s 7 of 11. Julia Sion, however, shot well on the floor, scoring 15 points to lead Memorial.

Tamya Renfro had 24 points to lead Central.

Memorial will visit Lumberton at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

PNG unbeaten in scrimmages

With the season-opening Waller tournament looming, Port Neches-Groves wrapped up its preseason scrimmages with a 3-0 record.

PNG beat Santa Fe 4-0, Little Cypress-Mauriceville 5-0 and West Brook 2-0. The Waller tournament begins Thursday.
