A suspect was accused Friday of stealing a donation jar from a Lakeview area store and firing shots at people who chased him.

The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. at La Viva Grocery, 1049 Stadium Road, Risa Carpenter, Port Arthur spokeswoman, said.

Officers were told the suspect entered the store and took a donation jar from the cash register counter. He then fled on foot while witnesses chased him.

Police dispatchers were told the suspect fired several rounds at the citizens and as officers arrived on the scene they heard more shots fired from the alleyway, Carpenter said.

Officers located the suspect in the alleyway and after a brief foot chase took him into custody.

Officers found the money and a stolen handgun. The suspect was arrested and charged with multiple robberies.
