Port Neches neighborhood spreads holiday cheer

PORT NECHES — Residents in a section of Port Neches that saw the brunt of Tropical Storm Harvey have banded together to bring some Christmas cheer to others.

Cousins Kelley Frioux and Erica Gauthier sat around reminiscing over Thanksgiving on how they would be loaded up in the car to look at holiday Christmas lights in the Windsor Addition off Saba Lane when they were children.

Now, the two women and their families are residents of the addition.

“We thought, let’s see what we can do in our neighborhood,” Gauthier said. “We thought, maybe this is not the year, then, why not if we can bring back some holiday cheer?”

So after communicating with the 300 or so homes in the neighborhood, sending out letters and even getting tips from older residents who took part in the once annual neighborhood lighting event, Windsor Wonderland is back.

The addition includes roughly from FM 365 to just past Kings Row and Saba Lane to just past Windsor Lane at the concrete ditch. There is a Windsor Wonderland sign at both ends of the area.

Not everyone in the Windsor Addition was unscathed by Harvey’s flooding and both Frioux’s and Gauthier’s husbands brought out boats and rescued people.

“You will literally drive through and see PODS, and trailer homes, and some are lit,” Frioux said. “The neighborhood is not 100 percent back yet.”

Participating homes have one thing in common: a wooden cutout of a Christmas tree and many are decorated to match their own holiday light theme.

The cousins also worked to bring back an event cherished from their childhood – Santa.

“We remember waiting in the car in the line to see Santa,” Frioux said.

Visitors can do the same this year at 7p.m. Sunday on Roundtower Lane and 7 p.m. Friday on King George Drive. Santa will be out saying hi to the children and giving out candy canes.
