NEDERLAND — Diann LaPoint, director of B.A. “Booty” Ritter Senior Citizens Center in Nederland, said there are a lot of people hurting in her city, particularly in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey.

LaPoint and the volunteers at the center decided to do something about that. They gave the money they made from sales at the Christmas on the Avenue a couple of weekends ago to the city of Nederland. From there, city officials chose the Community Care Prayer Center on Nederland Avenue to help others.

“We didn’t do this for the publicity,” she said. “This can show others a way we can all help.”

The seniors, moreover, voted at their board meeting to cancel their annual Christmas party and instead give the money to help others.

Chris Duque, Nederland city manager, said the city has been working with Community Care Prayer Center for almost a decade.

In addition to delivering the senior citizens center donation, city staff has also delivered food drive items following their Christmas luncheon and items for the toy drive after their Thanksgiving luncheon.

“Libby and her volunteers do a great job helping people,” Duque said. “Our people always helped when asked. We did a blood drive the other day and they came out and helped.

“Some of our people are hurting themselves, but they want to help.”
