Ready, set shop: $1,200 gift basket up for grabs

NEDERLAND — The folks at Nederland Economic Development Corp. have developed a fun way to shop locally and possibly win a basket of gifts worth upwards of $1,200.

To participate, shoppers can stop by any of the 32 participating merchants and pick up a stamp card beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. From there, participants go to each of the listed merchants where they can do some shopping — or not — and get a stamp on their card. Completed cards must be dropped in the box on the porch at the NEDC office, 1519 Boston Ave., by 5 p.m. that day and a drawing will be held Monday.

Kay DeCuir, executive director of the NEDC, said the idea came from a conversation with a business owner some years ago who saw it in Bridge City.

“We talked about it here off and on so, after Harvey, we wanted to get as many people in our stores this year,” DeCuir said.

DeCuir and Christinia Herrmann, administrative assistant, began considering ideas on how to make the idea work that would benefit both merchants and shoppers. Each of the merchants ended up donating either a store item or gift card and in many cases, both.

Basket items include everything from food to crosses, candles, clothing, crystal, jewelry and more.

“For consumers, that day, there are already big sales going on and even more with Shop Nederland,” she said. Merchants will have a variety of seasonal events going on from Christmas carolers, to visits by Santa, refreshments, live music and more.

“We were very impressed with how quickly they (merchants) jumped to participate,” she said. “Plus, the basket contains 32 gifts. If a person was hit by Harvey or had a bad year or may don’t need all of the items, there may be something, say a piece of jewelry for example, that they can give to a niece, neighbor or someone.”

Participating Nederland merchants include Sassy Trendz, Cuttin’ Corners, Down to Earth, Burkette’s Emporium, Durso’s, Paisley Peach, Kid’s Closet, The Old Merchantile, Chatzkies Home Décor, Gaudie and Co., Zandy Zoo’s, Holland House, the Rustic Door, Mollie’s Boutique, Fred Miller’s Unique Gifts, County Home & Outdoors, Glory B’s, Twisted Gypsy, Classy Peacock, Simply Chic, Crunchy Momma’s, Boss Burger & More, Setzer’s Hardware, Kimball’s Creamery, Boston Emporium/Pieces of Shady Oaks, Southern Skylights, Curvy Couture, Baubles & Bliss, Sweet Tea Furnishings, La Mision Thrift Store, Dana’s Jewelry and Sew Much More.
