A candlelight ceremony for parents who have lost children is set for 7 p.m. Sunday at Doornbos Park in Nederland.
The event is presented by Grieving Mothers –Jefferson County and is in conjunction with a worldwide event through Compassionate Friends.
Sindy Flores knows all too well the pain of losing a child. She lost her 19-year-old daughter on Dec. 13 nine years ago.
“This vigil is for any one that lost a child, be it stillbirth or at age 50 or 100,” Flores said.
The event is open to all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings etc. of a lost child.
She said newly grieving parents would find comfort at the vigil.
“Being around other people that understand this pain, that know this pain, makes your life easier,” she said. “My favorite saying is ‘it is only through seeing others that have lived through this that makes me think I can.’ When my daughter’s accident first happened, I lived by that motto.”
Sunday’s event will include an introduction of each of the children for whom a candle is being lit and an ornament will be placed on the tree. Participants are asked to bring a photo no large than 8-inch by 10-ich and bring your own candle.
There will be cookie and punch served before the event begins.
