Meteorologist Rob Megnia said the snow — perhaps an inch in some places — was the result of extended polar air combined with moisture here, the right combination for snow.

He said temperatures were about 32-33 degrees at 7 a.m., enough to snow and enough that some snow on grass, rooftops, bridges and on shaded areas may remain for part of the day.

Megnia said it doesn’t have to be freezing on the ground for snow to form and fall, but it does for snow to last.

Forecasts had called for the possibility of snow although it was more likely north of Interstate 10.

Temperatures were expected to climb to a high of about 47 later Friday, then reach the high 50s over the weekend.

School opening was delayed an hour for Port Neches-Groves, and until 10 a.m in Bridge City.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said there were no reports of road or bridge closings.

In Orange County, the Sheriff’s Office said there was a single call about ice on Highway 62, but no other complaints about road or bridge conditions.

TxDOT’s travel map reported ice and snow at Beaumont and Orange, but no accidents at 7:30 a.m
