Crowds brave the cold for Nederland’s Christmas parade

NEDERLAND — Temperatures dropped and rainy skies cleared just in time for the Nederland Chamber of Commerce’s annual Lighted Christmas Parade on Tuesday.

Organizers had kept a watchful eye on the weather, waiting until noon Tuesday to make the call as to whether to postpone or not.

“We wanted to proceed with this if we possibly could because when you have to move a parade this big you start to lose entries and with the holidays around the corner there are other events all this week, band concerts, choir concerts, parties,” Diana LaBorde, president and CEO of the chamber, said. “We watched the weather very closely and had very good weather people tell us this front would be in and out by 5 p.m.”

Mitzi Adaway, daughter Lindsey Peoples and granddaughter Rorie Deason arrived early and were bundled up and ready for the parade along Nederland Avenue near 20th Street.

People said she had never attended Nederland’s Christmas parade before and was excited to see it along with her family.

Not far from the trio were Louis Campbell and wife Christine. Their adult daughter Sophie watched the parade from the warmth of their vehicle while the couple helped friends Cody Chhay, a third grader and William Chhay, a preschooler, collect candy.

Nederland’s Christmas parade is said to be one of the largest parades in the Mid and South county area other than Mardi Gras. Upwards of 80 entries were scheduled to take part in this year’s parade.
