Sophomore Rodney Brown picked up his second double-double performance in as many games, leading Lamar State College Port Arthur to a 95-82 win over Victoria College on Friday night at the Carl Parker Center.

Brown, a West Brook graduate, scored 22 points with 10 rebounds, adding two assists, two blocked shots and one steal as the Seahawks improved to 4-2 for the season.

“I’m just trying my hardest out there, hustling for loose balls and really doing everything I can for the team,” Brown said. “Every game, we’re getting closer as a team, working together better as a team and you can see that with these wins. Things are really beginning to gel for us.”

The Seahawks head to Florida next week for the Pensacola Beach Classic where they will face Northwest Florida State College and home team Pensacola State College. NJCAA Region XIV play opens after that with a road trip for LSCPA to Tyler on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Tipoff for that conference opener is at 7 p.m.

Victoria College came out strong early against the Seahawks and never let up the pressure as they led by as many as five and held an advantage for much of the first half.

The Hawks finally went ahead when Tevin Baker fed Stefan Radosavljevic for a layup and a 24-22 lead with 8:16 left in the first half.

“We started off slow,” said Silsbee sophomore Travious Grubbs. “They were speeding us up and we were getting frustrated. Finally, we were able to settle down and play our game and things started coming together for us.”

Grubbs nearly collected his second consecutive double-double performance with 16 points and eight rebounds against Victoria, adding four assists and two steals. Redshirt freshman Ethan White, a San Antonio product, added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Seahawks. Matej Gaspert, the 6-11 sophomore center from Croatia, added 12 points with five rebounds.

“This was a hard-fought game,” Grubbs said. “We would get out front and then they would cut it back down to single digits. We would regroup and push back ahead again.”

A big part of Victoria’s success came on its shooting from beyond the 3-point line. Naod Rezene hit five 3-pointers and was 6 of 6 from the free throw line in putting together 21 points. Shermar Coleman added a perfect 3 of 3 from beyond the arc in putting up 11 points.

“This is one of those games that really helps us get a better feel for each other,” Grubbs said. “We faced adversity tonight and we came out on the winning end.”
