“As far as we’re concerned, we still control our own destiny, and that’s all we’ve asked for since day one,” said Nederland coach Monte Barrow on the team’s playoff hopes heading into next week’s final regular season game. “We know we’re in if we win next week.
“Coming off the bye week and having two weeks of preparation for tonight’s game, it was nice to get back on the field again. I know the guys were itching to get out here. We came out looking like a team that was refreshed and ready to play some football.”
Simmons rushed for a game-high 247 yards on 19 carries. He had two touchdowns on runs of 43 and 49 yards. He also caught two passes for 14 yards. Lumberton mounted a late rally, but still came up short. Jace Bridges and Karr connected for a pair of late touchdowns for the Raiders. The first scoring strike was a 30-yard pass play with 4:42 left in the fourth to make the score 41-24.
The Raiders successfully executed on on-side kick and took over possession at the 50. Four plays later, Bridges hit Karr on a 35-yard scoring strike with 2:56 remaining to make the final score 41-31.
“I thought our guys did a great job of focusing on the task at hand tonight and not getting ahead of ourselves, which is not an easy thing to do,” said Barrow in regards to next week’s Mid-County Madness matchup. “After the game I usually tell the guys to enjoy this one and we’ll get started on next week’s opponent on Monday. But I think this victory is behind us now and all our thoughts are on next week.”
