Landry tied for Sanderson Farms Championship lead

Andrew Landry owns a share of the lead for the first time in a PGA Tour event, but he probably left the Country Club of Jackson, Mississippi, thinking about how much lower he could have gone Thursday in the opening round of the Sanderson Farms Championship.
On the way to a six-under-par 66, the Port Neches Groves ex began as if he was attacking the old Pea Patch. Starting on the back nine, he birded the first four holes, sank a wedge from 110 yards for an eagle on the fifth and made the turn in seven-under 29.
It was uphill from there, however, as Landry dropped back to five under after bogeys at the first and fourth holes on the front. He didn’t make another birdie until rolling in a 4-footer his final hole.
The 66 left Landry in a five-way tie with Ryan Armour, Conrad Shindler, J.J. Spaun and Wyndham Clark.
Landry, in needing only 29 shots his first nine holes, took just 10 putts.
He buried birdies from 5, 10, 20 and 21 feet before sinking the eagle from the fairway. His final birdie on the opening nine came when he chipped in from 44 feet on the par 4, 18th.
Television coverage of round two in the Sanderson Farms Championship begins Friday at 1:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
