Ken Washington started at quarterback for Lincoln and led the Bumblebees to one of its most outstanding runs in school history.

More than four decades later, Washington’s exploits has earned him a spot in the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame.

Washington will represent the 1970s when he is inducted into the hall at Baylor University’s Ferrell Center on May 5. The hall announced a star-studded class of 2018 Wednesday that includes Texas Tech great Bobby Cavazos and current Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Washington played for his father Joe Sr. and with his brother Joe Jr. at Lincoln from 1971-73, guiding the Bumblebees to a 30-4-1 record and their first three playoff appearances in school history. Ken Washington threw for 4,014 career yards, at the time the third-highest total for Texas’ top classification, and was named first-team all-state and to Texas Football magazine’s 1973 Super Team.

He signed with North Texas and became the Missouri Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Year in 1974, winning Associated Press co-back of the week following a 213-total yard effort against SMU in his college debut. He led North Texas to a 10-1 record in 1977 and finished his career with 4,313 total yards, including 3,040 passing, and 33 touchdowns.

North Texas inducted Washington into its sports hall of fame in 1996.

Washington will go into the hall with Cavazos, a Kingsville running back in the 1950s; Brad Dusek, a Temple quarterback in the 1960s who starred with the Washington Redskins in the 1970s; Tommy Jeter, a Deer Park defensive tackle in the 1980s who starred at the University of Texas; Kingsbury, a New Braunfels quarterback in the 1990s and Texas Tech quarterback in the early 2000s; and Johnathan Gray, an Aledo running back from 2009-11 who rushed for 2,607 yards at UT.

Calallen coach Phil Danaher and former Buda Hays coach Bob Shelton also will be inducted, as will Texas Stadium manager Bruce Hardy as a contributor to the game. Danaher, the winningest coach ever in Texas with 427 wins at the start of 2017, coached at Dilley (1974-77) and Hamshire-Fannett (1978-83) before going to the Corpus Christi school.
