BEAUMONT – Lamar senior Evelyn Chavez was named the Southland Conference women’s cross country athlete of the week for her performance at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday.

Chavez, the reigning Southland Conference cross country champion and women’s cross country athlete of the year, opened the 2017 season by finishing sixth at the Texas A&M Invitational in a time of 21 minutes, 17.2 seconds for 6 kilometers, leading the Cardinals to a second-place finish in the 17-team field.

“Evelyn had a very impressive start to the season,” LU coach Tony Houchin said. “She picked right up where she left off last year.”

The Cardinals got a late start to the season, being unable to compete in their first two scheduled meets due to Hurricane Harvey.

“We kept focusing on training and getting better,” Houchin said. “We never used it as an excuse.”

On the men’s side, LU’s Jamie Crowe earned honorable mention for the weekly award after finishing 11th at the Texas A&M Invitational in a time of 24:21.8 for 8 kilometers.

The Cardinals return to action when they compete in the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, California, on Oct. 14.
