CRITTER CAM

Published 11:53 pm Wednesday, August 2, 2017

Last week while visiting YO Headquarters in the gorgeous Texas Hill Country, I saw two deer I could not easily identify. Turns out those two deer, which you can see in this photo, are an ultra rare white phase of sika deer. Sika are typically brown with some varieties having faint white spots. They basically look like mini elk. I have literally seen thousands of sika but never heard of the white ones. The one pure white specimen is the rarest of the rare as most born white turn the cream color you see in the other specimen. And for those interested in the identity of the bear featured last week. It was a sun bear from Asia. • To submit photos to the Critter Cam project, email them to chester@kingdomzoo.com. Put “Critter Cam” in the subject line.
