Man who died in jail custody identified

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who died in jail custody as Howard Fletcher, 70.
An autopsy was completed and final results are pending toxicology.
Around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, an inmate in the medical infirmary of the Jefferson County Correctional Facility reported that his bunk mate, a 70-year-old white male, was unresponsive.
Jail staff immediately began CPR and notified EMS. They continued CPR until the EMS arrived and took over. The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
He was currently in custody on the charge of fail to register as a sex offender.
