NEW ORLEANS – In a weather altered day that featured only three events for the Lamar track and field teams, Deja Phillips took the Cardinals’ first crown with a championship in the women’s long jump Friday at the Southland Conference Championships, hosted by New Orleans at Tad Gromley Stadium.

Phillips, Thai Williams, Evelyn Chavez and Adam Richard all scored for their respective teams. The women’s team leads the way with 21 points in two scored events after day one of the meet, and the men have five points after three scored events – LU only competed in one.

Phillips notched her personal best in the women’s long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 8¼ inches, which gives her the fourth longest leap in school history. She hit the mark in her fourth jump, and neared it again in the fifth.

She earned the Cardinals’ 10 points with her jump, and teammate and indoor long jump champion Thai Williams finished with five points scored. Williams was fourth in the event with a 19-foot, 2-inch leap. Her scoring mark was on the third jump.

Chavez took bronze in the women’s 10,000-meters Friday with a 37:07.67 time, and scored six points for the women’s side. Her fastest lap of the race was the final, when she turned in a 1:21.54 leg.
