Fans of Lamar State College Port Arthur basketball only got to see John Comeaux in action for one season. But the Ozen graduate made it count in a big way.

“We’re going to miss him,” Lamar State coach Lance Madison said. “He’s a big part of our program. I’m happy to see John come here.”

Madison, along with fellow Seahawk players, were also happy to see Comeaux sign a letter of intent with Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday in a shared ceremony with softball standouts Savana Guidry and Kayla Sheridan.

“It just determined on how much I progressed at the point guard position,” said Comeaux, a true freshman. “As you can tell, it turned out for the best.”

Along the way, the 6-foot point guard received national attention.

The NJCAA named him its Player of the Week on Jan. 11 after he scored a career-high 47 points on Panola College five days earlier. That set a single-game record at Lamar State, and it included the game-winning basket with 2 seconds left in a 97-95 decision.

Comeaux started 28 of 30 games and reached double-figure scoring 26 times. He averaged 19.8 points per game and 22.5 in South Zone play, ranking him second in Region XIV. He led the zone with 122 free throws made.

“My passing developed so much more from when I came out of high school,” Comeaux said. “My scoring was always there and I improved on new moves and everything else.”

His 593 points for the season is fourth all-time and 63 steals fifth all-time at Lamar State.

“I think his basketball IQ has gotten better after one year of junior college,” Madison said. “His decision-making has gotten better. He values the basketball. He’s very explosive, athletic and gets to the basket, draws the other fouls, very quick in changing directions, a very good defender as well who can play both size.”
