NEDERLAND — Let’s be honest.

Sure the Nederland Heritage Festival has fun rides, games, entertainment and attractions, but probably most people’s drawing card is the food. Year in and year out, the vendors serve a variety of foods to meet all kinds of palates.

For instance, the Nederland Rotary booth is known for their fried Oreos. Gay Ferguson said they’ve been busy all week and they’re expecting to be really busy this weekend.

In addition to the fried Oreos, they also serve pizza, lemonade, Klondike bars and bottle water.

The Southeast Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse of Port Arthur were serving pulled pork nachos and pulled pork wraps.

Jimmet Lawrence said those dishes have been “very popular.”

“It’s a lot of fun here and it’s for a good cause,” said Ales Floyd. “We’ve had a lot of volunteers come out and help too.”

And just as the Nederland Rotary is known for their fried Oreos, the Nederland Chamber of Commerce booth is known for its funnel cakes. In fact they serve three different kind of funnel cakes. They also serve funnel fries.

“Funnel cakes are the most popular,” said Brenda Horton. “They will line up way past the trailer for them.”

“We get busy every night. At dinner time you won’t be able to walk.”

Likewise, First United Methodist Church of Nederland is well known for their strawberry shortcakes.

A second booth for the church serves stuffed potatoes, potato soup and banana pudding.

Nederland Girls Softball was serving chocolate delicacies such as Oreo balls, chocolate covered cheesecake and chocolate covered strawberries.

Alicia Montondon said the homemade Oreo balls are always a crowd favorites.

Business has been hit and miss for them, until things pick up later in the evening.
