BEAUMONT – Lamar State College Port Arthur left a trail of broken hearts after an incredible weekend where the Seahawks knocked off 5 of 6 NJCAA Region XIV opponents in the Crossover Tournament, held at the Beaumont Athletics Complex and hosted by LSCPA.

On Sunday, the Seahawks beat Kilgore College 6-5 in the early game, then topped Tyler Junior College 8-6 to clinch their second straight day of perfect softball.

On Saturday, the Hawks beat Trinity Valley Community College 6-5 and Northeast Texas CC 7-5, while Friday’s schedule had the Seahawks splitting with a 10-2 win over Paris Junior College and a 4-3 loss to Navarro College.

The Seahawks have now won eight of their last nine games heading into the NJCAA Region XIV conference opener at Galveston College this Friday. That’s followed up by a Saturday road trip to Alvin Community College. Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.

As a team, the Seahawks had a .375 batting average in the tournament, collecting 11 doubles and four home runs for 32 runs batted in.

Nederland sophomore Savana Guidry led the Hawks at the plate, hitting 13 of 24 for a .542 batting average, with three doubles and four runs batted in. She also had five of LSCPA’s 14 stolen bases.

McKenzie Andrus, a Vidor sophomore, had a .526 batting average, going 10 of 19 at the plate, with 3 doubles, while Kayla Sheridan, a Sulphur, La., sophomore, was 10 of 23 for a .438 average with a double and four stolen bases. Morgan Chavarria, a freshman from Bryan, finished 9 of 19 at the plate for a .474 batting average in the tournament, collecting a double and a home run.

Cleveland freshman Ashley May finished with a 4-1 record on the mound, throwing 11 strikeouts while allowing 12 earned runs over 22 2/3 inning pitched for a 3.706 earned run average in the tourney. At the plate, she had a .350 batting average with a double and three home runs.

Corpus Christi freshman Briana White earned the Seahawks’ other win on the hill and finished the tournament with a 3.706 ERA.

 

LSCPA 6, Kilgore College 5

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, LSCPA’s Guidry faced a two-strike count and a two-run deficit staring her in the face on the outfield scoreboard.

After fouling off two straight from the Kilgore pitcher, Guidry doubled a shot right down the third base line to plate a pair and clinch an exciting 6-5 win over the Rangers.

The Seahawks were up 4-1 after the third inning but Kilgore kept chipping away, scoring runs in the fourth and fifth to pull to within 4-3, where it sat until a two-run Ranger output in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Seahawks went to work with a leadoff walk from Regan Dowers. Shelby Broussard came in to pinch-run for Dowers, reaching second on a groundout and third on a Morgan Chavarria single, putting runners at the corners and setting up the clutch walk-off double by Guidry.

Guidry finished 2 for 5, while Kayla Sheridan and Dowers were 2 for 3 at the plate in the game. Clarissa Moreno and Chavarria each were 2 for 4 as the Hawks collected 11 hits in the win.

White got the start on the mound, working four innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Kelsey Stewart worked 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. May got the decision on the hill after working a third of an inning.

 

LSCPA 8, Tyler Junior College 6

After a four-run fifth inning by the Seahawks, it appeared LSCPA would walk away with another win at the Crossover Tournament. But, as has been the norm for the Hawks this weekend, things just weren’t that simple.

Tyler scored two runs in the top of the sixth to knot the game at 6-6, putting the game in the hands of the LSCPA offense in the bottom half of the inning.

Sheridan singled to open the inning, then stole second. With two outs, May homered on a line drive to left field for the 8-6 advantage.

May worked the top of the seventh inning to near-perfection, allowing a walk but forcing three other hitters into infield outs to preserve the win.

Guidry, Sheridan, Andrus, May, and Dowers each had two hits in the game with Dowers slapping an RBI-single in the fourth inning for LSCPA’s first run of the game.

May went the distance on the mound, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits with a strikeout and four walks.
