The folks at First Christian Church of Port Arthur have come up with an innovative way to reach out to those in need of prayer.
The church started offering drive-thru prayers starting on Jan. 4 in the parking lot at 5856 Ninth Ave. in Port Arthur. Prayers are offered twice a week from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays.
There has been decent turnouts with the exception of last Wednesday night when it rained. More drivers usually stop on Saturdays with a couple of dozen last Saturday.
Minister Scott Wallace said church members have been very regular about making drive thru prayers.
“We hope it picks up when the days get longer,” he said.
People who stop in for prayer are given a Bible and a bottled water.
Church members Johnna Claxton and Janna Bearden came up with the idea about the drive-thru.
“I manage an apartment complex and the idea for drive thru prayer popped into my brain,” Claxton said. “Some drive through and honk. We get all kinds of requests about family, addictions, forgiveness, jobs, health.”
