PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves girls soccer team shutout back-to-back state semifinalist Jasper Friday at The Reservation.

PNG got the game-winning goal from Grace Seymour with 4:34 left in the match.

The Indians (7-0-1) got an outstanding match from its defense and another stellar performance from junior goalie Libbie LeJeune. She had 16 saves in the victory.

PNG is off until next Friday when the team cranks up District 22-5A action at home against Ozen. The match is schedule to start at 7 p.m.

 

BOYS SOCCER

NEDERLAND WINS TWO IN BRENHAM

BRENHAM — Torrey Gomez’s Nederland Bulldogs started its portion of the Select Showcase in Brenham off with a pair of shutouts Friday.

Nederland first defeated Liberty 5-0 as the Bulldogs (4-1-1) outshot the Panthers 11-1.

Kevin Monroe and Travis Wiedenfeld each had two goals and Jace Edgar added a score. Alex Celaya and Alan Ramirez both had assists.

The Bulldogs then blanked Needville 3-0 with goals from Celaya, Aldo Ramirez and Kevin Monroy. Celaya also had an assist.

Keeper Anthony Drago was credited for the two clean sheets.

Nederland faces Brenham and Crosby today at the tournament.

 

BOYS HOOPS

LUMBERTON 46, PNG 42

LUMBERTON — The Raiders (7-15, 2-5 in 22-5A) broke a third-quarter stalemate and knocked down 9 of 10 free throws in the final period to edge the Indians (6-15, 2-5) by four points.

Houston Sonnier, who did not score in the first half, made his last five free throws in the period and finished with 14 points for the Raiders. Eight of them came at the free throw line.

It was 11-all after one period and 33-all after the third. Lumberton was ahead 22-16 at the break, but PNG’s T.J. Jordan gave the Indians a lift with a pair of treys. He and Derrick Papa each had 10 points, and Edsel Damo had nine.

Gaven Whitmire added 13 points for Lumberton.

 

EVADALE 83, SABINE PASS 76

SABINE PASS — Evadale (14-5, 3-0 in 24-2A) had to heat up in the final 2:41 after being tied with Sabine Pass (5-14, 0-2) at 71-all to come away still unbeaten in district play.

Jamyus Jones and Daniel Sam combined for more than three-fourths of Sabine Pass’ scoring. Jones had 39 points, including five three-point baskets, and Sam finished with 23 points on 11-of-21 shooting.

Free-throw shooting doomed the Sharks, however. They made only 6 of 16.

 

GIRLS HOOPS

LIVINGSTON 61, PA MEMORIAL 42

LIVINGSTON — The Titans (4-15, 3-5 in 22-5A) dropped a key game in the district race needing to stay on pace for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Julia Sion had nine points and Kennedi Lofton added seven for Memorial.
