Filing for May 6 election begins

Filing for a spot in the May 6 city and school election ballots starts Jan. 18 and ends Feb. 17.

Wednesday was the first day to file for a place on the city of Port Arthur General Election ballot for May 2017, and two incumbents have already filed.

Tiffany Hamilton, District 2 councilwoman, and Charlotte Moses, Position 7 councilwoman. The last day to file is Feb. 17.

Early voting is from April 24 to May 2. Election Day is May 6. Runoff Election Day is July 1 if applicable.

In Nederland, two seats are up this election cycle including Ward 1 and Ward 3. The Ward 1 seat is currently held by Talmadge Austin, and the Ward 3 seat is held by Don Albanese.

For those who want to file for a seat, applications can be obtained from the city clerk’s office at 207 N. 12th St., Nederland, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Filing fee is $25.

Two seats on the Nederland Independent School District board are up this election cycle. They include the seat currently held by board President Marty Byrd and the seat held by trustee Kay DeCuir.

Applications for a place on the ballot for the NISD school board are available from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and ending at 4 p.m. Feb. 17 at the administration office, 220 N. 17th St., Nederland.

Two seats on the Port Arthur Independent School District board are up this election cycle. They include the at-large seats held by board President Kenneth Lofton and trustee Thomas Kinlaw.

Applications for a place on the ballot for the PAISD school board are available from Monday through Friday at the administration building, 4801 9th Ave., Port Arthur.
